Start your maritime career with a DG Shipping approved GP Rating course.
Get trained for both Deck and Engine department responsibilities.
General Purpose (GP) Rating is a six-month pre-sea training course approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), Government of India. It is one of the most popular entry-level pathways for individuals who want to join the Merchant Navy after completing their 10th or 12th standard.
GP Rating candidates are trained in both Deck and Engine Room operations. They can work in either department depending on the company’s requirements. Their responsibilities include seamanship tasks, cargo handling, deck maintenance, and assisting in the operation and maintenance of ship machinery. This course greatly improves the employability of Indian seafarers in the global maritime industry.
Unlike specialized courses, GP Rating trains candidates for both the Deck Department (navigation, cargo handling, maintenance) and the Engine Department (machinery operation and maintenance).
It is a mandatory residential program where students undergo intensive physical conditioning, safety drills, and classroom learning to prepare for life and work onboard ships.
After 6 months of training, students must pass an external exit exam conducted by the Board of Examination for Seafarers (BES) to receive the Indian Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC), the legal license to work on ships.
